Valtrex – hsv medication

What is Valtrex?
Valtrex is an antiviral drug treatment which helps the body to resist a viral infection. Antiviral drugs can not cure herpes or shingles, and the herpes virus can never be completely eliminated from the body. What Valtrex can do is to treat an outbreak of herpes.

More information

When you experience an outbreak, the virus spreads inside the body. Valtrex helps to slow down and prevent the spread of the virus. This will reduce and weaken symptoms for all herpes diseases.
Valtrex can be used by both children and adults, but euroClinix only offers medication to adults above the age of 18. This drug is produced by GlaxoSmithKline.

How does the medication work?
Valtrex contains the active ingredient valaciclovir. Valtrex is an antiviral medicine which converts inside the body into another active ingredient known as aciclovir. Aciclovir is short-acting and slows the spread of infected cells inside the body and stops them from reproducing and spreading to uninfected cells.

A somewhat more complicated description of how the drug works is that it is only activated inside the body when it encounters cells infected with the herpes virus. When Valtrex encounters infected cells, it attacks the DNA of the virus and in this way prevents an infection.

Valaciclovir – the active ingredient
The active substance in this treatment is valaciclovir. This is the substance which gives the medication its effect. The name also refers to generic treatments. euroClinix only offers drugs from the world’s leading drug manufacturers and does not offer generic valaciclovir tablets.
Once inside the body, valaciclovir is converted into aciclovir. If you are allergic to any of these two substances we recommend you not to use the above mentioned drug.

Valtrex for treating shingles
This treatment has been proven effective in the treatment of shingles. Since the virus that causes shingles belongs to the herpes family of viruses, this drug treats shingles in the same way as it treats other herpes virus.
Valtrex prevents the spread of the virus inside the body during an outbreak, and in this way the drug lessens symptoms and speeds up the healing when a shingles infection occurs.
The recommended dose for the treatment of shingles is three 500 mg tablets each day during seven days, which means that you will need 21 tablets in order to complete a full treatment.
It is important to start the treatment as early as possible. Pay attention to common symptoms, such as itching or burning pain, fever, tremors, headache and upset stomach, followed by skin rashes a few days later.

Valtrex for treating genital herpes
This is a common treatment of genital herpes used to lessen the immediate symptoms during an outbreak. Valtrex decreases the severity of unpleasant sores and blisters within 24 hours and can shorten the duration of an outbreak to as little as 5 days.

Even though the infection is called genital herpes, the virus may affect other parts of the body as well. For example, herpes type 2 may also affect the throat and the anus. This treatment effectively treats this type of infections as well.

Valtrex can be used for treating outbreaks of genital herpes, but can also be used as a preventive. The use of antiviral drugs is usually recommended to those who suffer severe symptoms and to those who have regular herpes outbreaks.

To treat an outbreak, take one 500 mg tablet two times each day. For treating a primary outbreak the recommended treatment period is 5-10 days. During a recurring infection the recommended treatment period is 5 days.

In order to complete a preventive treatment you should take one 500 mg tablet every day.
