Famvir – hsv medication

What is Famvir?
This treatment decreases the severity of the outbreak within 24 hours and helps to prevent the spread of the herpes virus inside the body. Famvir also speeds up the recovery process and can be used as a treatment of an infection or as preventive treatment.

More information

Famvir is a treatment which helps to reduce pain or may prevent outbreaks of herpes. The treatment works for oral herpes, genital herpes as well as shingles.

This treatment does not cure the herpes virus, since the herpes virus remains latent in the body. Famvir also does not reduce the risk of infection. Therefore it is important not to engage in sexual intercourse if you have genital herpes, even if you are taking Famvir. Also, if you have cold sores it is important to be careful. It is good to know that oral herpes is often transmitted through saliva.

Famciclovir – the active substance
Famciclovir is the substance that gives Famvir its effect. The most important advantage of famciclovir is that the substance, according to some medical studies, reduces the risk of future herpes outbreaks. One research showed that persons who had been treated with famciclovir instead of aciclovir had a 5 times smaller risk of getting another outbreak within a year.

How effective is Famvir?
Famvir is a short-acting drug that can prevent symptoms of the herpes virus within just 24 hours of treatment. It is important to start the medication as soon as possible. Famvir 500 mg should be used within the first 24 hours after the appearance of the first symptoms. Famvir may be less effective if you start using it more than 72 hours after the first symptoms of the herpes virus have become visible. Lower doses of Famvir can be prescribed by one of our registered doctors for a longer treatment. This treatment is especially effective if you experience regular outbreaks of herpes around the pubic area.

Who can use Famvir tablets?
Famvir tablets can be used by patients to lessen and prevent symptoms of genital herpes. Famvir can also be used to treat outbreaks of herpes simplex causing cold sores and shingles. The drug may be unsuitable for persons with the following diseases and allergies:
• Kidney diseases, including renal failure.
• Severe lactose intolerance.
• Galactose intolerance.
• Food allergies, allergy to food colouring and preservatives.

Are there any side effects?
Famvir may cause temporary minor side effects such as headache, diarrhoea, nausea and drowsiness. Even if side effects are possible, they are mild or moderate, and in most cases they will not even occur. Since low doses of Famvir are taken during a long period of time, your body will get used to the side effects and the longer the treatment continues, the milder the side effects will get.
